New era for Health & Safety

From 1 October 2012 the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) will introduce Fees for Intervention.  The scheme will have a massive impact on the “I’ll worry about that if it happens” approach to Health & Safety at work.

HSE Fees for Intervention

In the past, the HSE would write to organisations, or visit if there’d been an incident, or if safety concerns had been raised.  They’d work with the organisation to improve Health & Safety.  That remains unchanged, but from October the HSE will levy a charge for just lifting a pen to write to you.

If your organisation falls foul of Health & Safety you could be looking at charges of around £180 per hour, per HSE officer involved in your case.  (And it’s not unusual for a HSE inspection to involve 2 inspectors – so that’s £360 per hour!)

A customer slipping over on your premises, or a staff member having an accident could easily leave you with a nasty bill from the HSE – not to mention any costs involved in rectifying any Health & Safety lapses.
