The 1st South East Regional Volunteer Managers' Conference 2008, Empowering today's Volunteer Managers, at the International Lawn Tennis Centre, Eastbourne, November 6 2008 Volunteer managers enjoying the day

Conference Programme

The conference programme will be made up of a series of workshops that delegates can select from. The first six workshops to be offered at Empowering Today’s Volunteer Manager, have been announced:

Employee Volunteering with EDF Energy: Employee Volunteering is a phrase we often hear today. But how does it work, and how can your organisation benefit from it? EDF Energy have been running a successful employee volunteering programme for over 15 years. The manager of the programme will be helping delegates to explore how volunteer based organisations can build a relationship with EDF Energy. The workshop will look at how to get the most from employee volunteering relationships as well as what works and what doesn't.

Developing inclusive volunteering – volunteering has always been synonymous with inclusivity, but as a volunteer manager, co-ordinator or supervisor do you feel confident that you know the best ways to support disabled volunteers? Are you clear how the Disability Discrimination Act applies to voluntary and community groups? This workshop explores the steps you can take to actively promote diversity among your volunteers, the factors to consider when working with volunteers with physical and sensory disabilities and those with learning difficulties and on-going ways to maintain an inclusive approach.

Getting your message across – Most organisations could benefit from raising their profile –whether to promote a key message, attract new volunteers, celebrate their successes or publicise an event. Facilitated by a former journalise and experienced communications professional, this workshop take a practical look at how to create well structured media releases and design effective posters and flyers that get your message across.

Don’t let bad situations get worse – we all like to think that ‘it’ won’t happen to our organisation, but the sad truth is it can. The case of the community run playgroup hit by an outbreak of e-coli shows that it’s always wise to prepare for the worst. Would you know how to handle the media if your group was affected by a serious untoward incident like a fire at your premises, or a serious complaint taken to the press by a disgruntled volunteer or service user. In this workshop, an experienced communications professional will take you through what to do if things ‘go west’.

Volunteers and the law – Are you clear about the law and how it can apply to volunteering? Do you know what rights, protections and responsibilities the law places on volunteers? This interactive workshop introduces some of the basic legal principles relevant to working in the voluntary sector, including avoiding unwittingly creating a contract of employment with your volunteers, diversity and equality issues, criminal records checking and the data protection act.

Recruiting and retaining volunteers – Where do you go to find your volunteers? What kind of recruitment process should you go through and how do you keep your volunteers once you have found them? This workshop explores the categories of types of volunteer and the reasons why people might volunteer for you. Join us to take a critical look at what is effective in recruiting volunteers and different strategies for increasing your volunteer retention.

Dealing with difficult people – the life of a volunteer manager naturally brings you into contact with a wide range of people. Some will be a dream to work with, but we can find others more of a challenge. Whether they are colleagues, volunteers, service users or stakeholders, learning to understand ‘difficult people’ and the skills you can use to manage them can help you feel more confident in dealing with others. This workshop aims to help you understand what makes a difficult person, introduces classic difficult characters as well as some ideas to help manage them.

More workshops will be announced in the coming weeks. Book your place now, and why not come with a colleague to make sure you don’t miss a thing.
