Our First Aid training is delivered under the auspices of Abertay Training, a training organisation approved and monitored by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to provide First Aid at Work training. Through this relationship we are able to offer a trainer to deliver the full range of first aid training, including providing first aid assessors.
Our principal first aid trainer is a biological science graduate and taught physiology / anatomy at degree level. She has over a decade of experience as a First Aider, and is a member of the Association of First Aiders (AoFA).
There are so many first aid courses on the market, it can be hard to work out which ones are right for you. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) currently recognise the 'first aider' and the 'appointed person'.
A 'first aider' is someone who has completed a training course (usually over four days and called First Aid at Work) and has demonstrated competency in administering emergency first aid. At the end of the course they must pass a practical and theory test. The course and certificate must be issued by an organisation that is approved by the HSE. The certificate is valid for three years and must be renewed (with a two-day Refresher Course), before it expires.
McCrudden Training can provide a certified trainer to deliver four day First Aid at Work Courses, and two day Refresher Courses on behalf of Abertay Training (who are HSE recognised first aid training providers).
An 'appointed person' is someone nominated to charge is someone is injured or falls ill in the workplace (including calling an ambulance if necessary) and who is responsible for ensuring first aid provisions are available. Generally, 'appointed persons' are taught: what to do in an emergency; cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CRP, often called mouth-to-mouth, or the kiss of life); looking after an unconscious casualty, and how to deal with wounds and bleeding. Appointed Persons first aid course usually last between four and six hours.
McCrudden Training can provide a certified and experienced trainer to deliver Appointed Persons First Aid courses.
The level of first aid provision in any work place depends on the workplace. There is no fixed level, but every employer (or voluntary group) should consider:
the nature of the workplace and types of hazards/risks
the size of the organisation (including the number of employees)
the distance from the nearest emergency medical facility
cover for the absence (sickness or annual leave) of first aid trained staff
any history of accidents within the organisation
Typically, in a low risk workplace (shop, office etc) with less than 50 employees, or volunteers it is usual to have at least one 'appointed person' (but remember cover will be needed when that person is not at work). If your workplace is low risk but has more than 50 employees or volunteers, you should ideally have at least one 'first aider'. (More than 100 and you should have one extra 'first aider' for every 100 employees).
In medium risk environments (light engineering, assembly work, food processing and warehouses), there should be at least one 'appointed person' for work places with less than 20 employees. If there are more than 20 employees there should be one 'first aider' for every 50 employees. Finally, if the workplace is designated high risk (construction, chemical plants, extensive working with dangerous machinery or sharp instruments), there should be one 'appointed person' for every five employees, and at least one 'first aider' for every 50 employees.
