Deloitte’s Josh Bersin ranks coaching the most effective way of managing performance, saying that organisations that are effective at coaching their employees have better talent and business results that those that are not.
The CIPD studied manager-coaching schemes in some of the most successful UK companies and found that encouraging managers to coach staff increased their management skills, lead to greater employee engagement and commitment to the orgaisation, saved HR time and costs and accelerated talent development.
But what is coaching for managers? Just like a sports coach, it’s style a leadership behaviour in which managers share information, provide feedback and have conversations with their staff in order to develop them. Instead of telling staff what to coaching managers asks powerful questions to encourage staff to create their own solutions.
