Volunteer Managers Conference
The early-bird booking rate of £45 per person for the South East Regional Volunteer Managers Conference has been extended until 5 November 2012. Co-ordinated by Eastbourne-based McCrudden Training, this popular conference for the Third Sector organisations is being held at the Amex Stadium in Falmer and coincides with International Volunteers Day.
This year the work of volunteers has been well publicised during events like the Queens Jubilee and the Olympics/Para-Olympics, but what often goes unsung is the efforts of Volunteer Managers.
Volunteer Management – a professional career
A Volunteer Manager is anyone, paid or unpaid, who recruits, trains, supports or develops unpaid ‘workers’. It’s a niche skill. It’s not always easy supporting and motivating a ‘workforce’ who aren’t paid, not to mention navigating the legal aspects of looking after a group of volunteers. As a result, managing volunteers is steadily becoming recognised as a profession in its own right. It has its own set of National Occupational Standards and its own representative organisations, including the Association of Volunteer Managers.
With high profile events, the recession and the Government’s Big Society drive increasing public interest in volunteering, having skilled and knowledgeable people looking after volunteers is essential. The South East Regional Volunteer Managers Conference is one forum that those wanting to, or already working with, volunteers can access professional development. The third event of its kind, this year’s conference is supported by Albion in the Community and Volunteer Centre East Sussex.
“Funding cuts have hit volunteer based organisations just as hard as everyone else.” says Sarah Hodgetts from Volunteer Centre East Sussex. “There’s a common misconception that voluntary means free. It’s actually costly running a charity or not-for-profit based organisation. That’s why we’re delighted to be able to keep the conference fees so low” she adds.
